Kangaroo is a DIY home security company that was getting ready to launch their first security camera

Kangaroo, a DIY home security company, was gearing up to launch their first camera product.

I led the design team in the launch of Kangaroo's first camera product and app experience. This product joins a line of motion sensors, water sensors and more.

This product was the next in line after a series of security sensors. I led the design team in designing the integrated App experience.

The challenge was to integrate the user experience of the new Privacy Camera into the App effectively.

The challenge was to integrate the experience of the new Privacy Camera into the App effectively.

Our task was to integrate the unique lens-blocking technology of Kangaroo's first Privacy Camera into the app's interface. We aimed to translate the physical privacy feature into the digital realm, maintaining the same level of reassurance for our users.
Our task was to highlight the unique lens-blocking technology of the Privacy Camera into the app's interface.

We took a literal approach and replicated the physical Privacy Shield on the app, enhancing user assurance and control.

Our patented privacy lens forms a visible barrier on the camera, guaranteeing security even against potential hacks. When activated, this feature is mirrored in the app, allowing customers to see the same shielded view on their livestream as on the physical device, emphasizing their control over privacy.

Our research showed that privacy was the top concern for security camera skeptics.

Research showed, privacy was the top concern for security camera skeptics.

We ran surveys, interviews and diary studies to learn about user behavior, preferences, and perceptions. We used this information in a variety of ways, one of which was in the decision to include a Privacy Shield demo immediately after pairing, even before setup.

We learned about user behavior, preferences, and perceptions through a series of surveys, interviews and diary studies. We used this information in a variety of ways, one of which was in the decision to include a Privacy Shield demo immediately after pairing.

Before creating any flows, we tested 7 competitor security cameras and dissected the highs and lows of the experience.

Before creating any flows, we tested the competition, dissecting the highs and lows of each experience.

While we already had a strong pairing and setup process in place, from our other security products, the camera would be the first that had a speaker. Testing competitor products helped us understand how best to integrate audio into pairing.

With a successful 99% pairing and setup rate already in place, we maintained the existing flow as much as possible

All Kangaroo devices follow the same pairing and setup flow. This flow has been pressure tested and maintains a 99% success rate across products ranging from motion sensors to water sensors and more.

After the initial pairing, we walked users through the Privacy Feature

All Kangaroo devices follow the same pairing and setup flow. This flow has been pressure tested and maintains a 99% success rate across products ranging from motion sensors to water sensors and more.

Customers were eager to test out the feature, so rather than have them skip setup, we gave them a taste of the feature immediately.

As soon as the app is open, users can see if Privacy is turned On or Off, from the Home screen.

We continue to reflect the Privacy status on the livestream screen as well. In addition, customers will receive notifications if the privacy shield is turned on and off on the camera itself, or in the app by another household member.

From there, the Privacy status is also displayed on the livestream screen. In addition, customers will receive notifications if the privacy shield is turned on and off on the camera itself, or in the app by another household member.

Our final product was a big win among tech enthusiasts. However, it taught us a valuable lesson about balancing customer worries and costs.

Our product was a win amongst tech enthusiasts. However, it taught us a lesson about balancing customer worries and costs.

User testing revealed that the interface and interaction were well-received. However, the price posed an issue. Kangaroo's target audience leans towards lower-income individuals, and despite their privacy concerns, the camera was too expensive to be successful with this group.
